Links to the New Ventures

CarolynWard.ca is up and running!  I invite you to check out the new blog on Life With Faith and follow along as you like (there's a spot to get each post in your email, like I have here, and also a newsletter option.)

Kingdom Come Prints, the new Etsy shop with Scripture Printables, is also live.  There are only 5 items there at the moment (four are really just two with color variations), but there will be more added as I create them and offer them free on CarolynWard.ca every other week.

The first one was posted today - you can find the post here.  I chose Mark 12:30 - "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength."

Have a great weekend!

Something New and Exciting

I wrote my first blog post on October 11, 2005.  That's eons and 738 blog posts ago.  I can look back at the number of posts I wrote in a year and often tell what season of life I was in: the year I met and married Sean there were zero posts, the year I took a blog course and played around with it lots was by far the highest, and since I've had my shop I've written only about a third as much as before.

At various times I've thought of being done with it, but usually decided I enjoyed it too much as a creative outlet to give it up, even if I wasn't posting regularly; other times I heard from an unexpected person that they read / follow / enjoy my blog, and that was motivation to keep it up.

This season of my life is a time of wondering what's next.  My girl is 17 and graduating this year and making her plans for life after high school.  My boy just turned 5 and is going to be starting Kindergarten in the fall.  It's the age old mama question - what will I do with myself?  Find a job once he gets to full days?  What do I want to work at?  And for the more immediate future, I've been wondering about how I can best serve my God, outside the roles of being a wife and mom.

I keep coming back to blogging.  And I feel it's time to write a new chapter.  I've bought a domain and am in the middle of putting something together over on WordPress.  I thought of moving this blog over there, but decided to start a whole new thing, so I will keep this space for family updates, creative stuff, book recommendations, and what ever other random obsessions I indulge in, just as it has been.

There are a gazillion voices online; mine will be one more that chooses to bring hope and light and points to Jesus.  There will always be room for more voices doing that.  My new blog will be about living with faith.  I'll be sharing what I'm learning and noticing in God's word and in my life.  One verse that jumped out at me as I've been figuring out what this should look like is Psalm 105:1, which says:

Oh give thanks to the Lord,
call upon his name;
make known His deeds among the peoples.

Thankfulness, prayer, and telling His stories.  I want to do that.  It's been a few months of bouncing this idea around already, and I'm sure it will continue to be refined as I go, but I'm excited to be at the point where I am almost ready to launch.  Tuesday, February 7 will be the big day!  I will make sure to post a link so you can check it out.

Thank you for hanging out with me here this last decade and for sticking around.  I sure appreciate you.

PS - There's a Part II to this!  I'll let you know about that in a couple of days...

A DECADE OF BLOGGING

Today marks the 10 year anniversary of my first blog post.  Wow.

I have written about our family, things we've done and updates on the kids, to keep my family and friends in the loop.  I have written about books and trips and things I'm thinking about; shared scrapbook pages and recipes.

I've had years where I've written lots (162 posts in 2009!) and years of less (including 2006 when I wrote a big fat zero posts - but that was also when I met and married Sean...)  The name has changed a few times, and the look has had a number of makeovers.

A few major changes have competed for my blogging time in the last few years - having a little one around, for one, means very little computer time at all! and starting my shop online where I sell the goods I sew.  (I still love that, by the way, and it's going stronger than ever.)

I started with the idea of putting my voice out there, to share my thoughts, my heart, my faith, and today, I have the same desire.  So thank you to all my faithful readers and all my random readers, for sharing in this journey with me, for listening to my voice, and especially for when you share yours back with me.  I'm not going anywhere, and look forward to picking things up again in the new year.

Blogging for Compassion

I have written lots of times before about our connection with Compassion, the organization we sponsor children through.  (The post where I tell about all our kids is here.)  I signed up a while ago to become a compassion blogger, because I believe so strongly in what they're doing and how they're doing it.  Every once in a while they send me topics to blog about, and sometimes, if I can write something interesting, then I have.  I'm not a pushy about anything, though (I would be the worst sales person ever), so writing to tell you that you should sponsor a child - I probably just wouldn't do it.  I couldn't tell anyone that they should do anything.  Except my 13 year old - that's a whole different story!!  That's in my job description as Mom.

I got an email the other day from Compassion International, saying that September is Blog Month.  They are focusing on getting more children sponsored via the internet than any previous September.  So you may see a few more posts here with a Compassion theme - I'm on board to help with that goal.  I do think they do a fantastic job with the whole sponsorship thing, and would love to see some kids sponsored because I took the time to make you aware of the need.

I have to tell you that in thinking through this stay-at-home-mom job I've taken on, I did consider becoming an Advocate with Compassion.  There doesn't seem to be many events to help out at, though, and I didn't like the idea of having a stack of child packets that I was responsible for finding sponsors for.... because of that not-selling-things thing.  So I'll write a bit on their behalf, instead, and wear the Compassion Blogger badge with pride.

Blog Launch

Seems like an appropriate time to make a blog announcement.

Like any parent, I pray for my kid.  I pray for little things, for big things, for the problems I'm having with her (or with myself that's keeping me from dealing properly with her).  For the last number of years, I've been writing down some of those prayers.  Writing prayers, like journaling, helps me slow my thoughts and think about what I'm saying; it helps me pray better.  I've wondered for a while what to do with those prayers, and if they could be used somehow to help other parents pray for their kids by providing some inspiration, some ideas.

This last year or so I've made a habit of sitting on the couch by the front window when M leaves the house for school.  She catches the bus just out of sight down the road, so I sit there and read my Bible and write in my journal and watch for the bus, so I know she's on her way safely.  I've been using that as my trigger to pray, too.  I stop whatever I'm doing and pray for her when I see her bus going by.  It's been a great reminder.

School ended yesterday; today was the first day of summer vacation.  I'm so glad summer is here (especially today's 31 degrees!), but as of today, no school bus as a prayer trigger.  So as of today, I am launching a new blog.  It's been in the works for a week or so now, and I'd like to offer it to you!  Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I'll be posting a prayer for our children - I'd love it if you prayed along with me for the kids in your life.  The address is: http://prayersformychildren.blogspot.com/ or you can get there with the link below.

Sorry for neglecting you, Dad.

(sitting in my parents living room, Dad watching hockey, me on my laptop)

Dad:  What are you looking up?

Me:  Nothing.  Just reading blogs.

Dad:  You haven't been blogging much lately.  I understood when you were working out, but now that you're not...

Me:  We only took a break for a week - we're back at it.

Dad:  You should have written that - how were we supposed to know?

**********

Sorry, folks. Apparently I've been leaving you in the dark.  P90X update - Sean's bout with BPPV was minor and short lived, thankfully, so we've been back at it for a couple of weeks.  Three weeks left!  I did take the disc and workout in my hotel last weekend, but we also left them at home this weekend and are just skipping them completely.  In the ultimate compliment, my mom said my shoulders are looking like the boys' - my wiry nephews.  Made me laugh.

In other thoughts, here's a thread from the blogs I was reading that resonates with me.  It's along the lines of what and how we think of ourselves.  Seth Godin had a post last week called Turning the habit of self-criticism upside down.  Why do we put ourselves in the best light possible when dealing with teams and bosses, but beat ourselves up in our own heads about all kinds of things?  He suggests taking responsibility for the things we 'learned from' at work, and, what struck me was be more supportive of yourself.

In the same vein, my friend Jackie has been posting lately about making changes in her life - she wrote a post about how thinking about the things you are working towards is far more effective than the black hole of focusing on the negative things you are trying to move away from.

Focus on what I want to be & where I want to go.  Be supportive of myself & encourage myself that I can do it.  Life ends up being so much more positive... these are reminders I need again and again.

Highlight of the Ward Family Christmas

There`s going to be a wedding!
Sean`s brother Sheldon surprised Lynsey with a ring in the pocket of the jacket he got her for Christmas.  (And I got a fun engagement photo of them, courtesy of the new lens...  Thanks, Sean!)

**********
We got to see an itty bitty baby today - our friends had a baby boy on Thursday afternoon & were at church this morning to show him off.  (Well, ok, maybe they were there to worship, but we all sure checked him out!)  Their birth announcement is a little video worth watching - some older sibling celebrating going on there.  Congrats Darren & Christine!!

M has a blog with school - if you want to check it out, you can do that here.  She`s MW if you`re browsing through the class list.

W is for Work Blog

I blog at work.  Sometimes.  Usually I have more pressing work to do and the creative time it takes to think up and write isn't in the schedule.

I do think it should be a priority, though, for me and the others on our staff, because we want our website to be more than simply the place people can go for the details.  It is evolving, slowly; it is current and if you are looking for specific details, you should be able to find them.  Hopefully you'll find some content that is more than you were looking for, too.

I dream, though, of the day when people will find content that makes them think.  Find something that will challenge them in the same way we try to do when we meet together.  To know through our site that people care and can be trusted.  Too much to ask of a website?  Well, I believe it should be an extension of ourselves.  What we want the church to be is what it should be too.

So W is for my Work Blog.  I recently switched it over from Blogger to WordPress, so there's not a lot of content archived yet.  That would be here at the old site.

Thanks for visiting.

J is for Just Curious...

What I'm curious about is who YOU are!  To help me celebrate this 300th post, please please please leave a comment and tell me where you're visiting from.  A very simple "Hi from Susie in Timbuktu!" works.

I'll love you forever.  I promise.

F is for Friends Who Blog

Here today, for your reading enjoyment, are links to the blogs of people I actually know.

Aaron and Erica Kenny - The Kenny's hosted us for a lot of our time in Kenya, and this blog follows their family, and the work they do there.

Alexis Arbuthnott - A friend from Regina who has moved to Guelph.  She and Shane are expecting their first baby in a few weeks, and it's great to be able to follow along this journey even though she's moved away.

Erin Graas - A friend from way back - KBK first, I think.  She's just moved to Costa Rica to take a teaching position, and I have to fight twinges of jealousy over her adventure.

Heather Vanderstelt - Heather and I went to Kenya together and because we keep up with each other's blogs, we keep up the friendship we started - wow - two years ago.

Holly Johnson - A great friend who flew the coop all the way down under and has been there for two years!

Jackie Ludke - We played basketball together at Briercrest, and love the visits we get every couple of years.

Jamie Bertram - Another friend from Briercrest days.  Her blog is from her daughter's point of view, and is always entertaining.

Tera Howitt - Tera goes to my church and just started a blog.  She's only got two posts, but she's a friend who blogs, so here she is!

Tyson Lyske - Tyson works at another church in the city, and always has something thought provoking on his blog.

Did I miss anyone?  If you have a blog (whether you know me or not!) leave a comment and I'll come and visit yours!

A is for Alphabet August!

I had a fun idea for a series of posts!  This and the next 25 posts are going to follow the ABC`s... There might be a few tough posts to find ideas for, but thankfully the tricky letters won`t come up for a few weeks!

So this is today - your introduction to Alphabet August!

something to try

There are lots of blogs out there that have a narrower focus on scrapbooking or recipes or crafty stuff, but I've chosen to make mine an extension of who I am, and so you'll find stories here from our lives, funny stuff that M says (like this morning when I woke her up: "Is it Saturday yet?"), my scrapbooking layouts, spiritual stuff, and creative stuff.

That said, I like to try to keep this worth reading, so I was browsing on StumbleUpon yesterday to find something cool to post for you, and found this:

I made one and didn't show M, but sent it out the door with her to play with on the bus...  A fun start to both our days.  The longest part is drawing it out on the paper and cutting - the taping is simple, and in just a few minutes you've got this fun crazy paper thing that you made yourself!  (Let me know if you make one, too!)

PS - Jess and Dave got home safely from Israel - I'm looking forward to hearing all about their trip.

It's a Posting Party!

My first post on Sunday was my 200th post on this blog.  Wow.

I posted twice on Sunday, once yesterday and this is my THIRD today.  It's a posting frenzy!  I'll be keeping it up all week to celebrate 200 posts - thanks for coming along for the ride!

Kallie, fish, tea and golf.

Kallie - our summer youth intern and my good friend is off to Bolivia for the second half of her internship. Her blog is kalliedebolivia@blogspot.com if you are interested in following along.

Fish - You'll notice some new fish on the side ---> Move your mouse over there and they'll follow it. And if you click the mouse on there, it will give them food. Just some random fun.

Tea - I finished Three Cups of Tea last week (because it was a one week loan from the library - they give one week no renewal loans for the 'new hot' books). It was a good true story of one man's life building schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan - I love hearing from someone who knows what it's really like in a place describe life there. Inspiring, too. I'd recommend it.

Golf - Sean and I went golfing this morning. I like not keeping score. At some points I'd be thrilled with this new sport and want to go out and buy clubs of my own and make this a regular thing, and then the next swing I'd be very unimpressed and sure I would not take this up after all. Is this common? Do you golf? Do you recommend I take it up or leave it alone for the sake of my sanity??

Welcome to the new me!

I needed a change around here again. What do you think? I had a hard time finding a template I liked, because you want to pick something that is YOU, and nothing quite measures up. I'd have to do it myself, but I don't have the skills to get what's in my head out onto paper or the screen. But this one will do. I browsed well over 1000 templates, and this one caught my eye more than most, so it will be the 'me' I present to the world. I guess my words say more than the design about who I am, but first impressions and what you communicate with your visuals say a lot, too. That's a big part of my new job - I'm enjoying it quite a bit, the managing of the visuals and words and output... Getting good feedback on the first couple of projects, too, which is nice. Nothing's released yet, but I'll send you over to the site to see when they are.

Have a great night! I'm off to sleep away the last hour of August.

A Facelift (for the other blog)

I changed up my other blog now, too, to line up with my new role. Check it out if you'd like - I'm calling it the churchy blog. This will be the one that is linked to our website and that I'll use to write more churchy stuff. If it's good, I'll post it here too, so no need to follow both!

No. 175

By the numbers:

This is post # 175 on this blog, which I've been writing since November 11/05.

I wrote 5 posts in 05. 0 in 06. 16 in 07, 40 in 08 and 113 in 09.

There have been 3321 visits by you in the last 11 months - I started keeping track September 27, 2008, about the time I started writing a lot more.

My visitors (since May of this year when I started keeping track) have come from 13 different countries.

I have made lots of style changes, and had 3 (at least) different names for this.

There are 39 labels of things I write about.

The most comments I have had on a single post was 7. That was 6 posts ago.

**********

Please leave me a comment with a number in it that has to do with your day today.

Also please leave a comment and let me know if you follow this blog in a reader of some sort (because if I follow YOUR blog, it's through Google Reader and you probably don't know I follow... so I'd like to know who you are that do!)

And thank you for reading. It's a little more motivation to write knowing you're checking in.

Highlights from my week

Kenyan Shoes - On Sunday I went to a shower where one of the other guests was an African lady. She has been here for some time, but still was wearing an African dress, and had made an African dish for the snack table. I was not sitting by her, and so did not get to talk to her until the end when we were leaving. I noticed her shoes were similar to mine (that I got in Kenya last year and was wearing for the first time this season). I asked where she got her shoes, and she said in Kenya. How fun to say, "Really? Me too!" She is from Zambia - I'm glad I got a chance to meet her.

More Africans - Tuesday morning I went to the Ladies Coffee Connection at church and sat at a table with two African ladies, and the one month old daughter of the one. Sometimes I'm not sure how to ask where someone's from, because I don't want to offend by assuming they have immigrated when they've been here their whole lives. So I asked the lady I was sitting beside (the cousin of the one with the baby) if she has lived in Regina long. A safe question. And no, she's only been here a month. So I asked, "Oh, where are you from?" I think I did laugh out loud when she replied, "Winnipeg." She came to visit and help when her cousin had the baby. I never did find out where in Africa they were from, but found out we did have something in common! I'm from Winnipeg, too...

We Win!!! - Tuesday we won our soccer game 3-1. And I think it was our first warm game, too! Our record is 2-4-1.

The Lost is Found - Tuesday after the win we went to DQ to celebrate, then to shoppers to get something, and then to another shoppers when the first didn't have what we were looking for. Then I realized my cell phone was not in my pocket. Hours of driving and checking and phoning later, we get a call that it was found at the last store. Big relief. This whole experience was more a negative than a highlight, but the getting it back was a relief.

Italian Prayers - Yesterday morning I put M's breakfast on the table and went to get her Bible (because I read a chapter to her while she's eating, since I eat earlier with Sean). I get back to the table to find her angelically praying with her eyes closed and hands clasped in front of her. Then she opens her eyes and says, "I said grace with an Italian accent!" Dear-a G-sus...

Green Trees - As I drove from our back lane onto the street, I was struck by the fact that the trees lining the street (and it's on older neighborhood, so there are lots) were GREEN! Not full leafy summer green, but they were definitely covered in new spring green. That was good for my soul. I drank it in all the way down the street.

Ultimate Fun - Last night I joined the young adults and youth at the legislative buildings to play some Ultimate Frisbee and had a GREAT time. So good to run around with friends. I'm glad I went and am planning to go again next week!

2000 Visitors!!! - When I checked here last night (when I should have been writing my paper that I never got around to) I noticed that my counter was at 2000. That's pretty awesome. Thanks for wanting to read what I have to tell! I started the counter last fall, when I started blogging more often, so that doesn't include the first two years of visitors, (but I'm not sure there even were any, then).

I've been thinking all week, "I should blog that!" and so now here you have it. FYI - if I just have a little snippet to share, I'll 'twitter' it - I'm treating Twitter like a mini blog, so check out the side -----> for the mini posts. Have a great day, everyone!

Trippy Test

Found this link on another blog: it's a test to see how well you can see color. I got 8; lower is better with 0 being perfect.

COLOR HUE TEST

**********************************

I was playing around to see how I could schedule this post to show up tomorrow (and if you know, let me know, as I haven't found it yet) and I stumbled on the 'compose' button beside the 'edit html' button on the create post page. WHY have I not noticed this before??? On this page I can do bullet points, change the font and size and color of the font, I can justify... Crazy. Funny what makes me happy. Why have I not noticed this in all these YEARS of blogging?

*********************************

Where do I find all these other blogs that have all these cool links that I send you to? Well, in an attempt to increase visitors to my blog (what? It's true...) and because sometimes I have stuff that people might actually want to read, and because I like to check out all their blogs, once I post, I go to SIStv, my online scrapbooking community (where I am ranked a "fashion plate" for my 321 layouts, posts and comments) and I find the thread in the forums that says "Friday bloggers?" or something like that, and I leave a note and a link to here so they can come visit. And then I go check out the others that have been updated. And then I come back here to share the cool stuff they've found.

Savouring Sunday Silence

I just finished my last assignment for my Life of Christ class. Finally. I am VERY happy to have that wrapped up. Too bad the next one (Pastoral Ethics) has already started and has deadlines looming. But I will take a minute here to celebrate the one being done.

Sean was off to the races today and is on his way home from Yorkton, and M left a couple of hours ago to go to a sleepover, so I'm enjoying a few hours of me-time. Although is writing a paper what YOU would do with me-time? I needed to and I will relax with Sean when he gets home. And now I'm relaxing and hanging out with you. That's fun in my books!

I needed this quiet right now because today the terrible horrible no good very bad monster in my child beat up and took over the sweet obedient loving girl in my child and ruled her for a few good hours. I managed for the most part to stay calm and firm and I won. She knows I have to, but she put up a good fight today. Worse than in a long time. Maybe because Dad wasn't home to put her straight with one word, and she thinks I'm more of a pushover...? Whatever, I won, and all is good. The monster left and the sweet girl was back well before she left for the sleepover. (Or you know that would be gone, too.)

Enough of that hard real life stuff - did you notice my new little icon beside the name of the blog? Check up top in the web address. Please leave a comment and let me know if you know what that is!!!

One other thing I've been meaning to point out - I noticed in my archive list (below) that I have written more posts this year than I have in all of 2005, 2007 and 2008 combined. I've had a lot of fun playing around on here, writing and changing up the layout, showing you my stuff and just messing around. Thanks for reading and commenting (that's the part I like the best!) I'm excited to see all the dots on my map, too - it was up for 3 days then got lost in a transition, but I've added it again. The count is skewed, but a few more weeks and I won't notice. I love seeing where you all come from.

We almost bought a vehicle yesterday. This was the closest we've come yet, but we decided to wait until there's something we know for sure is meant to be. We test drove a Ford Escape, a Dodge Avenger and a Ford Fusion. Someday, maybe. For now I will be happy with the one that is paid for.
